A pair of authentic L. Hitchcock maple fan-back Windsor side chairs, hand-stenciled with the company's iconic gilt fruit-and-vine crest and bearing the original Hitchcocksville, Connecticut maker's stencil.
Produced around 1970, these beautifully proportioned chairs reflect the enduring appeal of New England Windsor craftsmanship with sculpted saddle seats, graceful turned legs, and classic H-stretchers for added stability. The warm maple finish and traditional hand-applied decoration make them equally at home in an Early American, English Country, or collected farmhouse interior. Sold as a matched pair, they work beautifully as dining chairs, hall chairs, or flanking a console or fireplace.

One of the pleasures of handling antiques is recognizing a piece before you ever see the maker's mark. Hitchcock chairs have always done that for me. Their graceful proportions and hand-stenciled crest rails have such a distinctive presence that I recognize them almost immediately, especially since I grew up in New England, where they have been part of homes for generations.
