Here is a beautiful antique Victorian rocking chair dating to approximately 1890–1910, featuring a carved wood frame with traditionally hand-woven cane seat and back. The chair has such a lovely silhouette, with an oval back crowned by carved floral and foliate detailing, gracefully scrolling arms, turned front legs and stretchers, and long curved rockers. The warm wood frame has developed a wonderful aged character that contrasts beautifully with the lighter natural cane.
Both the seat and back are traditionally hand caned, rather than fitted with pre-woven sheet cane, with particularly beautiful decorative finishing around the perimeter. The caning appears to have been professionally redone more recently and is exceptionally clean, tight and intact. Considering the expense and craftsmanship involved in hand caning, this is a particularly nice feature—the chair retains its antique character while being ready to enjoy.
I also love the relatively petite proportions. At just under 20 inches wide, it has all of the romance and character of a Victorian rocker without feeling oversized or cumbersome. Its smaller scale would make it especially charming in a child’s room or nursery, while still being equally lovely in a bedroom, reading corner or sitting room.

Structurally sturdy and sound with age-appropriate wear, marks and patina to the wood frame. The chair has a light creak when rocking, consistent with its age.
