Pierre-Honoré-César Pons
Horologist
(1773 - 1851)
An important French gilt bronze desk clock and aneroid barometer, mid-19th century or later, the movement stamped “Pons / Médaille d’Or,” referring to the celebrated French horologist Honoré Pons and his 1827 gold-medal distinction. The signed Pons movement gives the piece greater historical and horological significance, connecting it to one of the key figures in 19th-century French clockmaking and the development of high-quality Paris-type movements. The architectural gilt bronze case is cast in the neoclassical taste, with paired fluted columns, acanthus ornament, pinecone finials, beaded borders, rosette molding, a scrolled carrying handle, and a rectangular plinth raised on bun feet. The upper white enamel dial has Roman numerals and twin winding apertures, while the lower dial is marked “Aneroid Barometer” with weather indications including “Stormy,” “Much Rain,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” “Dry,” and “Very Dry.” The combination of a signed Pons clock movement with an aneroid barometer reflects the 19th-century taste for precision mechanical instruments presented in refined decorative gilt bronze cases.
