A remarkable and exceptionally well-documented Edwardian sporting trophy with provenance established by both its original presentation card and a contemporary newspaper account. This handsome brass carriage clock was awarded as Third Prize for "Best Bitch of Couple" at the Cattistock Hunt Puppy Show, held on July 23, 1907, and remarkably retains its original handwritten presentation card concealed beneath a removable panel.
The concealed card records the award as "Presented by Mrs. Welby." Contemporary coverage published in the Western Gazette on July 26, 1907, identifies the recipient as Airy, a young Cattistock Hunt foxhound raised by puppy walker Mr. Guy, who won Third Prize for Best Bitch of a Couple.
The brass carriage clock is housed in its original leather-covered fitted presentation case, finished with an embossed crosshatched pattern and lined in deep burgundy fabric. Ingeniously, one side panel lifts away to reveal the original handwritten presentation card concealed within—a feature intended from the time of presentation. The clock itself is a French brass carriage clock, retailed by T. Braybrooke, Dorchester, c. 1900-1907. It is both an elegant Edwardian desk accessory and a tangible record of one of Dorset's historic foxhound kennels. Examples retaining both their original award documentation and published contemporary verification are encountered only occasionally, making this an exceptional piece for collectors of English sporting art, fox hunting memorabilia, and Edwardian country house antiques.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Most Edwardian presentation clocks have long since become separated from the stories behind them. This example is a rare exception. Not only does it retain its original handwritten presentation card hidden within the fitted leather case, but the award itself can be matched to the published results of the Cattistock Hunt Puppy Show in the Western Gazette of July 26, 1907. That contemporary account identifies the winning foxhound, Airy, and her puppy walker, Mr. Guy, transforming this from an attractive Edwardian carriage clock into a documented artifact of one of Dorset's historic foxhound kennels. It is precisely this combination of original object, surviving documentation, and independently verifiable history that collectors seldom have the opportunity to acquire.
