This is an authorized Colonial Williamsburg furniture reproduction by Kittinger Company of a New England wingback easy chair, based on a circa 1750 original.
One of the most popular of the Williamsburg chairs, this beautiful, well made, and generously sized chair has a high back, curved arms, and solid mahogany cabriole front legs united with turned stretchers. Outstanding construction as expected from the Kittinger Colonial Williamsburg Reserve Collection, model number CW-44. Has early Colonial Williamsburg brand marking on back leg. Upholstered in a rust orange jacquard with a large scale stylized floral pattern.
The late 20th century wing back chair is in good vintage condition. It shows very well and is exceptionally well made. Upholstery fabric is overall very clean but has scuffs on the back corners, scattered scratches, and faint stains. The mahogany legs have scratches and wood loss on a back leg. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the chair.
The chair measures 46.5” tall, 37.25” wide, and 32” deep with a 19.5” seat height and 26.25” arm height.

History of Colonial Williamsburg Furniture Reproductions
In answer to public demand, a the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation developed a Craft Program with the idea of extending the historical and artistic influence of Colonial Williamsburg by making available to the public reproductions of some of its antique treasures. It was an educational program that it was hoped, would help "the future learn from the past" (to paraphrase the legend on the Colonial Williamsburg seal) with resulting income designed to help maintain and support the organization.
In 1937, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation selected the Kittinger Furniture Company of Buffalo, NW, as the exclusive licensee for Williamsburg reproduction furniture. Between 1937 and 1990, Kittinger reproduced more than three hundred antiques, both English and Colonial, late 18th century, from the furniture's Golden Age.
The reproductions that Kittinger Company made under this program were true copies of the original antique in the Williamsburg collection. The original antiques to be copied were withdrawn from exhibition and copied in exact detail by the manufacturer.
With all these reproductions, there went a bill of sale in the 18th century manner bearing the seal of Colonial Williamsburg Incorporated and setting forth the known history of the original and its location, with the hallmark of the foundation stamped on each piece. In the early years of the program, Kittinger artisans dressed in quaint eighteenth century costumes and working with tools of colonial days, exhibited their craftsmanship to visitors at the Ayscough House in Colonial Williamsburg.
Kittinger and Williamsburg collaborated on this magnificent project for more than 50 years until their association ended in 1990. Their collaboration produced furniture reproductions known the world over for unquestioned authenticity. These pieces are still found today in the world's finest homes and even in the White House in Washington, DC.
