An exceptional French Louis XVI-style mantel clock set, dating from circa 1855–1860 and signed by renowned French clockmaker Japy Frères et Cie. This magnificent 3-piece antique ensemble includes one marble and ormolu bronze mantel clock with two matching cassolettes, all richly decorated with sculptural neoclassical details.
The clock is made from marble and lavishly mounted with heavy gilt ormolu bronze. Its upper section is crowned by a decorative coupe with garlands and ribbons, topped by two finely modeled birds in a romantic composition. One bird rests on a bench, while the other stands with wings extended, creating an elegant focal point.
On either side of the clock case are two detailed putti. One is shown writing, while the other studies a globe, adding a charming narrative and classical symbolism to the design. The lower section features a richly modeled ormolu plaque with playful putti scenes: figures rowing, making music, and playing together.
The enamel dial is decorated with hand-painted floral garlands and features Arabic numerals. The movement is stamped Japy Frères et Cie and marked “Médaille d’Honneur 1855.” It has an 8-day movement, strikes every half and full hour, and has recently been checked and oiled by a professional clockmaker. The clock is in working order and comes complete with its pendulum, winding key, and bell.
The two original matching cassolettes are crafted from marble with ormolu bronze garlands, flame-shaped finials, and coordinating bronze plaques that repeat the decorative language of the clock. Together, the three pieces create a richly balanced and highly decorative French mantel set.
