Exceptional mid-century sculptural pottery plate by California artist Leroy Benjamin for Hillside House of Originals, dated 1961. This handmade studio ceramic piece features an organic crackle-textured center in rich gold tones with an ivory craquelure border and dark brown rim.
The plate has a striking Brutalist and biomorphic aesthetic characteristic of California studio pottery of the early 1960s. Five small sculptural protrusions rise from the textured surface, giving the piece a dimensional architectural quality. Beautiful as a centerpiece, wall display, or collectible California art pottery statement piece.
Leroy Benjamin and his wife Etta Benjamin operated the famed Hillside House of Originals in California following their successful vaudeville and marionette careers. Their studio became known for distinctive handcrafted modernist art and décor pieces.
