19th Century Carved Meerschaum Devotional Relief of The Descent from the Cross
Central Europe (German or Austrian), circa 1830–1880
Carved meerschaum, ebonized and giltwood frame, convex glass
Overall: 18" H x 15" W x 4" D
Carving sight: 10.5" H x 8" W
This finely carved 19th-century devotional relief depicts The Descent from the Cross (Deposition of Christ), one of the most emotionally charged and theologically significant moments of the Passion. Executed in deeply carved meerschaum and housed within an ebonized and giltwood oval frame under original convex glass, the work exemplifies Central European Catholic devotional sculpture of the mid-19th century.
The composition presents the lifeless body of Christ being carefully lowered from the Cross following the Crucifixion. Christ’s muscular torso is rendered with striking anatomical clarity, his head fallen to one side, emphasizing both physical weight and sacrificial finality. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus—the latter identifiable by his elevated position and the ladder—support Christ’s upper body, while below, the Virgin Mary and accompanying holy women reach upward in grief. Mary Magdalene appears near Christ’s lower body, her gesture conveying devotion and sorrow.
Symbolic details reinforce the narrative: ladders and tools of the Deposition frame the scene, while the Crown of Thorns and draped cloth below reference the Arma Christi and foreshadow the Entombment. In the background, crenellated city walls evoke Jerusalem, anchoring the event within its biblical setting.
Carved from meerschaum (sepiolite)—a prized material in Southern Germany and Austria for its softness and capacity for fine detail—the relief exhibits deep undercutting, individually articulated drapery folds, and expressive facial modeling, confirming hand carving rather than casting. Stylistically, the work draws upon Baroque Passion imagery, synthesizing compositional conventions associated with Rubens and van Dyck rather than copying a single Old Master source.
The original convex glass and period frame enhance the sculptural depth and devotional character. Minor wear and surface toning are consistent with age and material.
