Antique Japy Freres Grande Exposition 1855 Victorian Inlay Enamel Mantel Clock
An exquisite Antique Victorian mantle clock, crafted from gilt bronze with elaborate polychrome champlevé enamel. This piece is a superb example of the 19th-century European fascination with Orientalist design, showcasing intricate geometric and floral motifs in vibrant shades of red, blue, and yellow against a dark ground. The clock's architectural form features a pointed arch surmounting the dial, flanked by ornate scrolling supports on a wide, stable base. The gilt bronze dial is finely detailed with individual white enamel cartouches bearing blue Roman numerals. The time-and-strike movement is visible from the rear, featuring a pendulum and a single bell. The backplate of the movement is stamped with the number '8012'. Marked on its backside "Japy Freres 1855 Grande Exposition Med D'Honneur" A testament to fine French craftsmanship of the period, this clock is a stunning decorative and horological work of art
In good original condition showing some typical age-appropriate wear from normal use, the upper decorative element is currently not attached, and lacking a screw from the backside of the pediment. There is a slight bend with some enamel losses and repainting to the top surface of the piece leading to the feet like the center was a little too heavy for the design or is was dropped at some time. When wound the left side winds, the right is wound tight and doesn't advance. The movement oscillates when helped and only works for a short time
