Discovered in a private collection, this diminutive French miniature carriage clock is a genuinely scarce find — and one that ticks every box a serious collector could hope for.
The Rarity of the Miniature
Carriage clocks were made in enormous numbers by French manufacturers throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the miniature examples — like this one — are a different matter entirely. Produced in far smaller quantities, they were expensive luxuries even in their day, demanding the same skilled movement-making as the full-size versions but compressed into a fraction of the space. At just 7.5 cm tall (excluding the handle) and 6.3 cm wide, this is a clock you can hold in the palm of your hand. Finding one is rewarding. Finding one complete with its original leather travelling case is exceptional. Finding one where the case carries matching numbers confirming it as the correct original case to the clock — that is genuinely rare.
The Form & The Finish
The case is made in an elegant oval form, with bow-fronted, sides, and rear glass panels that give full visibility to the movement from every angle. It is one of the more refined carriage clock silhouettes, requiring more complex casework than the standard rectangular versions. The brass has developed a rich, warm patina over its lifetime — not polished away, not faked, but the real thing: the honest accumulation of decades that no reproduction can replicate.
The Movement
Inside, the movement is signed "Paris" and retains its original platform escapement, visible through the top viewing window — a lovely detail that lets you watch the heart of the clock at work. The dial is clean and classically proportioned, with Roman numerals and a crisp outer minute track. The original winding key is present, housed within the case itself.
The Travelling Case
The original leather travelling case survives — worn and with the honest tattiness of a well-travelled companion, but wholly intact and clearly protective of its charge across more than a century. The matching numbers are the critical detail here: this is not a marriage of clock and case. They belong together, and the numbers confirm it.

A Note on Condition
The movement is running, which is always encouraging in a clock of this age, but requires the attention of a competent horologist to bring it to consistent accuracy. A timekeeping irregularity is present — gaining when descending, losing when climbing — characteristic of a platform escapement issue that a specialist will address readily. This is disclosed plainly, as it should be. The glass panels appear intact; inspection is limited to visible areas. The brass case shows good patina and typical age-related wear throughout.
This is a proper collector's piece, not a shelf filler. The miniature format, original leather case, matching numbers, and signed Paris movement make it a highly desirable combination — and one that becomes rarer each year.
