Its form, defined by soft, flowing curves and rounded edges, stands out for its refined plasticity and remarkable sense of lightness, despite the solidity of the material. This piece was crafted using the renowned sommerso glass technique, a sophisticated process developed by Murano glassmakers for the creation of artistic glass. The method involves layering different colors by repeatedly dipping mouth-blown glass—shaped with a blowpipe by a master glassmaker—into crucibles containing molten glass of varying hues. Through this complex technique, the artisan transforms a dense mass of glass into a form that appears almost weightless and fluid, achieved by twisting, shaping with specialized tools, and hand-modeling every detail. Entirely handmade and produced without the use of molds, this centerpiece is a unique work, comparable to a sculptural piece of art. The rich coloration is achieved by adding specific metal oxides to the molten glass. During the final blowing phase, the master glassmaker skillfully blended and softened the transitions between colors with exceptional precision—an ability that reflects a high level of technical mastery. Dating from approximately 1960 to 1964, this piece exemplifies the outstanding quality of Murano glass production during that period. Created in a traditional Murano workshop, it embodies the centuries-old Venetian glassmaking tradition, where technical expertise and artistic intuition merge into a distinctive and enduring craft. The glassmaker demonstrates full control over both material and color, giving the piece a harmonious and well-balanced form. It transcends its original function as a centerpiece, assuming a distinctly sculptural presence. Thanks to its strong volumetric presence and the depth of its colors, it works beautifully both as a centerpiece and as a collectible decorative object. It integrates effortlessly into Mid-Century Modern interiors, contemporary minimalist settings—where it can serve as a focal point—or refined office spaces and bookshelves enhanced by directional lighting.
