This is a George III style red and gilt Japanned armchair featuring a pagoda-shaped crest rail.
Designed and hand made in Hong Kong by Maitland Smith in the 70's.
It features a vibrant orange Japanned finish with gilt detailing. The chair is inspired by the "Chinese Chippendale" style, which became popular in the 18th century as a European interpretation of Chinese design elements.It shows an handmade reticulated or pierced fretwork back, pagoda-style motifs on the crest rail. While referencing 18th-century designs, these chairs became popular during the 1970s or 1980s, for adding bold, decorative flair to interiors.
