Antique American Blue & White Spongeware Bowl, circa 1890–1900
A charming piece of American country pottery, this cobalt blue and cream spongeware bowl dates to the final decade of the 19th century. The boldly sponged cobalt decoration — applied freehand with a natural sponge — covers the exterior in the lively, organic patterning that defines this beloved American folk art tradition. The cream-glazed interior is clean and inviting.
What makes this bowl particularly appealing is its unusually low, wide profile — a less common form than the taller mixing bowls of the period. At nearly 10 inches across and only 3 inches tall, it has a generous, open presence that reads beautifully on a shelf, table, or countertop. It would be equally at home holding fruit, displayed as a decorative object, or used as a catchall.
Probably produced by one of the many American potteries active during spongeware’s peak production years in the Midwest or Mid-Atlantic region — Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Minnesota are all possibilities. Unmarked, as is typical of utilitarian wares of this era.
