5 Chinese Song Dynasty Celadon Bowls from the Jepara Wreck.
The bowls have a sculpted rim and are swiftly Incised with an abstract design of clouds or flowers. All bowls are covered with a thin translucent glaze in varying tones like pale olive green, grayish green, yellowish green and bluish green and with sculpted rim.
The foot left unglazed.
Dated: Chinese Song dynasty (1127–1279).
The ceramics recovered from the Jepara wreck were rather basic, utilitarian pieces with a typical sober rustic Asian charm.
The Jepara shipwreck was discovered off the north coast of Central Java in 1998( Java Sea).
Though very little of the wreck itself remained, the Jepara wreck yielded approx. over 10.000 pieces of ceramic along with other artefacts produced for overseas export.
It also contained numerous coins, dateable to the reign of Emperor Gaozong (r.1127-1162), 10th Emperor of the Song dynasty and first of the Southern Song.
The cargo testifies to the scale of ceramic trade through the port of Quanzhou, the largest Chinese maritime hub during the Song–Yuan period. Lot 2
Although celadon production took place around Longquan during the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127), the production of Longquan-style celadon was taken over and continued by the nearby kilns in Fujian during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279).
Celadon refers to a range of Chinese green-glazed stoneware and porcelain, as well as green-glazed ceramics from other countries like Thailand or Vietnam. It is used to describe various green-glazed ceramics but does not encompass all green-glazed wares.
