This armchair, model 042, was designed in the early 1960s by Geoffrey D. Harcourt for the Dutch design house Artifort. The design marks a significant moment in the development of modern seating furniture, in which comfort and functionality truly took center stage for the first time. Harcourt started from the premise that a chair should adapt to the person, and not the other way around – a vision clearly palpable in the inviting, enveloping form of this armchair. The 042 distinguishes itself through its clear, architectural structure: an elegant, light-looking metal base is combined with warm wooden rails and a sleekly designed shell. This balance between industrial precision and natural materials gives the design a timeless appeal that still fits effortlessly into both modern and vintage interiors. At the same time, the chair reflects the spirit of 1960s modernism, in which simplicity, honest use of materials, and mass production come together. This particular example has recently been carefully restored and reupholstered in high-quality black leather, preserving its original character while bringing comfort up to contemporary standards. The refreshed woodwork and cleaned frame enhance the quality and appearance of the design. As an early and influential work within Harcourt's oeuvre and the history of Artifort, model 042 represents a remarkable piece of design history – an armchair that not only convinces functionally and aesthetically, but also tells the story of an innovative approach to seating.
