The tobacco flag quilt is made from 86 tobacco flannels, also known as felts, which were inserted by tobacco manufacturers into their products in the early 1900s to advertise their brands and attract customers.
Each flag, typically made of cotton flannel, came in various designs. This quilt features world flags from just after the turn of the century. Tobacco companies began including promotional items in their packaging around 1870, but tobacco felts became especially popular, often saved by women and repurposed into household items like curtains, pillows, and throws.
This quilt is a collection of such felts with a flag theme, including Imperial Germany and countries that existed between 1900 and 1910 but no longer do.
Clover’s Cottage acquired it at an estate sale and has done no restoration due to its delicate condition.
Despite some felts coming loose, it remains an extremely rare and striking example of early Americana.
