An extraordinary example of early 19th-century French craftsmanship, this circa 1800 Empire mantel clock is a true collector’s piece. Executed in finely cast ormolu (fire-gilt) bronze, the clock showcases the goddess Diana in a richly detailed mythological composition, embodying the grandeur and symbolism of the Empire period.
Design & Artistic Composition
At the summit of the clock, Diana is depicted seated in a graceful yet commanding pose, dressed in flowing classical drapery. She interacts with a swan while holding a vessel from which water appears to flow, creating a dynamic, fountain-like scene. Multiple swans are integrated into the composition, symbolizing purity and divine presence, while reinforcing the theatrical narrative.
The dial is framed by two elegant columns adorned with classical motifs, reflecting the architectural influence of ancient Greece that defines the Empire style. Beneath, the base is richly decorated with a detailed relief scene featuring mythological figures including Zeus, playful putti, and Diana herself—adding depth and storytelling to the piece.

Crafted from high-quality bronze and finished in original ormolu, the clock retains its authentic fire-gilt surface, presenting a warm, luminous gold tone with remarkable depth. The white enamel dial, marked with Roman numerals, offers a refined contrast to the richly gilded structure.
