Excellent meissen rococo style piece of art: on a curved base plate with a diamond-patterned marble-effect finish, sculpted cushions adorned with tassels, upon which sit a girl and a boy, who carry the round clock case with dignity and composed strength. White porcelain dial with applied arabic numerals and gold hands; movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell. Pendulum medallion. Original movement checked by a master clockmaker, completely cleaned and fully functional. Designed by paul scheurich (1883-1945) who was painter, sculptor, graphic artist, drawer and stage designer. He worked for meissen manufactory from 1913 to 1936 and belonged to one of most important porcelain designers of the first half of the 20th century. On the design: first cast in 1915, originally in bronze. In 1918, scheurich was commissioned to produce a model suitable for casting in porcelain. The meissen manufactory acquired this model in 1919. The clock was cast in porcelain from 1920 onwards. Particularly striking, and typical of all scheurich’s designs, are the figures’ heads – usually with a high, receding forehead. For this, paul scheurich used his wife’s face as a model; see johannes rafael: paul scheurich, 1883–1945, porcelain for the meissen manufactory, [meissen manuscripts, special volume viii], meissen 1995, pp. 32ff. And p. 150. When one considers paul scheurich’s oeuvre, he undoubtedly ranks among the most significant porcelain designers of the 20th century. His clients included, amongst others, kpm berlin and nymphenburg.
