Mid-Century Modern pottery plates, designed and hand-painted by the American industrial designer Ed E. Langbein, and manufactured in Italy, circa 1930-1950.
Offered individually, each earthenware plate shows a variation of an Italian hillside village glazed in black, cream, and sepia tones on a terra cotta ground. Signed by the artist: Ed. Langbein Original, Italy.
Langbein’s work has been featured in seven Museum of Modern Art exhibitions in NYC. He produced his own lines of ceramic and glass decorative items, and tableware through his company, Edward E. Langbein Giftware in Brooklyn, NY. between the late 1930s-early 1960s. MOMA and several other Museums maintain his works in their collections. His designs were featured in the 1957 exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum entitled “Table Settings: The Old With The New”. Other designers featured is this show included Russel Wright, Raymond Loewy and Eva Zeisel.
