In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, there are over 70 different villages which have 35 different ways of working with various types of clay, glazes and firing processes. Oaxaca’s barro negro has a fascinating history that is both ancient and modern. The dark clay found in the San Bartolo Coyotepec region has been used since Mesoamerican times. Currently, around 600 families in and around San Bartolo Coyotepec are dedicated to producing utilitarian and decorative objects using barro negro. The harmonious blend of natural elements, firing techniques and traditional craftsmanship reflect the rich cultural heritage of Oaxacan barro negro pottery. This cutie measures 7” x 7” x 4 ½” W/D/H and weighs 1 lb. 1 oz.

This whimsical roly poly turtle shaped pottery vessel is made from barro negro which has been burnished enough to produce the glazed semi-shiny finish you see in the photos. Photographed in the round, to show all sides and nuances of the design and construction throughout. In excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. Handcrafted sometime in the 1980s by an unknown Oaxacan artisan.
