This antique German Meissen porcelain small bread & butter or dessert plate features hand-painted scattered flowers and gold gilding on a scalloped edge. In the ‘Streublumen’ or ‘scattered flowers’ pattern, which was first produced in 1820. The design features an assortment of flowers, such as violets, pansies, forget-me-nots, and orange blossoms accented with a gold rim. The "Streublumen" pattern originates from the German tradition of throwing flowers at a newly married bride and groom. The idea was that each time the flowers landed, they would form a unique, scattered arrangement, which is reflected in the design where no two pieces are exactly alike. The plate is marked on the underside with the famous underglaze blue crossed swords logo, one of the oldest trademarks in the world. Meissen porcelain is valued for the quality of the material: its brilliant white glaze, high translucence and the rich, deep quality of the hand-painted decoration and gilding.
