Remarkably refined antique French 19th century English style gilt bronze mantel clock by Guenée, an exceptional and highly decorative timepiece that blends French craftsmanship with strong British royal symbolism and influence. This striking clock is centered around a beautifully cast figural female figure, representing an allegorical queen or personification of sovereignty and empire. The figure is executed with remarkable detail, from the flowing drapery to the finely modeled facial features, embodying both grace and authority. Her presence reinforces the clock’s symbolic connection to monarchy, power, and national identity.
The case is richly adorned with intricate gilt bronze ormolu work, showcasing the highest level of 19th century craftsmanship. Every surface is decorated with elaborate motifs, scrollwork, and classical detailing, giving the piece a commanding and luxurious presence. Most notably, the case bears the inscription “Edward Rex,” which translates to Edward the King, most likely referencing King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. This detail firmly places the piece within a historical context tied to the British monarchy and adds a layer of narrative and collectibility.
Further reinforcing this connection, the lower section of the case features a finely cast British Royal Coat of Arms, an unmistakable symbol of England and the monarchy. This combination of inscription and heraldry makes the clock particularly unique, as it reflects a French interpretation of English royal themes—something highly desirable among collectors. The clock face itself is an elegant enameled porcelain dial, with classic Roman numerals and finely shaped hands, offering both beauty and legibility. The dial is framed by an ornate gilt bronze bezel that complements the surrounding decoration.
The overall composition is bold and architectural, resting on an elaborately decorated base with exceptional depth and dimension. The quality of casting, chasing, and finishing throughout is consistent with the work of Guenée, a respected name in French clockmaking known for producing finely crafted decorative clocks.
This piece is not only a functional timekeeper but also a statement object, ideal for placement on a mantel, console, or desk where its sculptural and historical presence can be fully appreciated. The piece is in good antique condition with the exception of some light surface scratches, Minor finish loss and normal age related wear there also appears to be a small hairline crack in the glaze of the face but we don't believe its all the way through.
