Elm was widely favored for utilitarian vessels because of its strength and resistance to splitting, making it ideal for repeated use in bread making and food preparation.
The bowl features a classic elongated oval form with generous depth and thick sculpted walls, originally designed for mixing and kneading dough. Flat integral handles are carved at each end, allowing the vessel to be easily lifted when full. The interior and exterior retain visible adze and gouge marks from the original hand-carving, giving the piece a wonderful rustic texture and authentic handmade character.
