This exquisite antique aneroid barometer is a superb example of early 20th-century precision engineering and European craftsmanship. Encased in a masterfully hand-carved solid wood frame with a radiating petal or "sunburst" motif, this piece functions both as a sophisticated weather instrument and a striking work of wall art.
The dial is signed "J. & A. Bosch, Strassburg i. Els." (Strasbourg in Alsace). This specific marking dates the piece to the period between 1871 and 1918, when Alsace was part of the German Empire. J. & A. Bosch were renowned makers of scientific instruments in the region.
The internal mechanism bears the prestigious "GL with Compass" hallmark of Gebrüder Lufft (Stuttgart), a world leader in barometric technology of that era. This collaboration between the legendary Lufft movement and the Bosch assembly ensures professional-grade accuracy and durability.
Visible "Open Center" Mechanism: The dial features a circular cutout, revealing the intricate internal aneroid bellows, brass gears, and blued steel screws—a highly sought-after feature for collectors.
Aesthetic Detail: The wood case shows a rich, deep patina with a lustrous finish. The dial is protected by beveled glass held in a heavy brass bezel.
Typography: Elegant German Gothic-style lettering indicates weather conditions: Stürmisch (Stormy), Regen (Rain), Veränderlich (Changeable), Schön (Fair), and S. Trocken (Very Dry).
Hands: Features a primary blued steel indicator hand and a secondary brass "set" hand to track pressure changes.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The wooden case is structurally sound with no cracks or major losses. The dial remains crisp with minimal oxidation. The movement appears functional (reacts to pressure changes). As with all antique scientific instruments, professional calibration may be required for precise local accuracy.
