Part of June Hastings’ “Collected Country House Collection” — a curated grouping exploring layered English and American country interiors.
An early 20th-century American folk art pincushion constructed in a sculptural stool form, featuring a hand-padded star-shaped textile top raised on naturally curved mounted cattle horns. The piece reflects a resourceful vernacular approach, combining domestic sewing utility with materials drawn directly from ranch and rural life.
Compact in scale, the form functions today as a decorative object or tabletop accent rather than a weight-bearing stool. Its worn textile surface and handmade construction preserve the honest character expected of authentic folk work, offering strong visual presence within collected interiors, Americana displays, or layered country house settings.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
From my perspective as a dealer and collector, what I respond to most about this piece is its unapologetic honesty. It feels as though it emerged from a specific place — likely a ranching region where utility and symbolism lived side by side. The five-point star, stitched and worn by hand, speaks to American identity; the mounted cattle horns anchor it firmly in the realities of frontier life.
This is not a polished decorative object. It is a piece of material culture — something made with what was available, shaped by hand, and used daily. I love that it sits somewhere between sewing tool, sculptural form, and conversation piece. On a table or shelf, it doesn’t whisper. It tells a story.

COLLECTOR'S NOTES
Star-form pincushions and horn-mounted novelty furnishings appear most frequently in American ranching regions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when everyday domestic tools were often adapted using locally available materials. Mounted cattle horns — long associated with Western identity and livestock culture — were incorporated into decorative household objects ranging from mirrors and hat racks to small stools and sewing accessories.
Examples such as this reflect a distinctly American tradition of vernacular craftsmanship, where utility, symbolism, and regional pride merged into highly individual folk expressions rather than commercially manufactured design.

The canvas pincushion surface shows extensive honest wear including fading, staining, fraying, scattered losses, and small separations at seams — all expected for a working textile element of this type and period. The padding remains present but softened with age; the top is decorative rather than functional and is not suitable for use as a footstool. Cattle horn legs display natural variation in color and surface with minor age wear, scratches, and patina consistent with authentic use. Horns are stable. Wooden internal structure shows age-appropriate shrinkage and surface wear visible along edges and underside. Overall, a highly evocative survivor retaining strong original character and material authenticity. Please Note: The room setting shown is a computer-generated image created for styling inspiration.
