Taxco’s long mining history—from tribute paid to the Aztecs through Spanish extraction and later prosperity under José de la Borda—provided the high-grade silver that made Spratling’s workshop influential, with substantial weight and purity marking authentic early pieces. Spratling also trained many future masters, including Antonio Pineda, Héctor Aguilar, and the Castillo brothers of Los Castillos, while supporting notable women artisans such as Margot de Taxco and Victoria Brilanti, helping define Taxco’s golden age of silver design.
