A sturdy well engineered Bohemian Chic style rattan cane, tall, fan back, Peacock-style lounge chair circa 1970s. Unlike others in the category generally referred to as "Peacock" this chair was designed to have a longer life span and withstand the more extreme elements mainly due to the thickness of the materials found in the the skirted base and the double reed woven diamond shaped trellis back rest. The makers of this chair are not marked but they are obviously made at the hands of skilled craftsman from the West Indies. Indonesia became region widely renowned for the expertise of working with the best materials for wicker and rattan rod furniture for decades.
This extraordinary accent chair is unlike any others that we searched for online in our earnest effort to find a matching chair to suggest attribution. The two contenders would be Ficks Reed except that the hand rests on the Ficks Reed collection are capped in proprietary brass. "knobs". The other close contender were the design duo Lio Carminati & Gio Ponti accent chair called the "Biancamano," from Italy in the 1950s as a contributing decor piece for the prestigious luxury passenger ship called Conte Biancamano. 10 leading designers of the day were commissioned to make showcase rooms on the ship and Gio Ponti orchestrated the massive undertaking and contribute his version of the peacock chair with his design partner Signore Carmanati. Whomever designed this chair 20 years after the ship took its maiden voyage undoubtedly was influenced by it.
A complimentary silk flower rose sash as shown in several of the photos is offered as a gift with purchase from Palm Springs Regency.
