A set of raised serving dishes and individual plates, that are beautifully embellished with entirely hand painted high karat gilding and hand painted heat-set enamel band of overglaze green.
These upmarket plates have embossed beads and flowers on the rim and ruffled outlines.
Circa 1840s - 1860s, likely made by Coalport.
In the mid 1800s, opulent tea services such as these were one of the important assets of society ladies along with their fashionable attire.
Anna Maria Duchess of Bedford is credited with inventing the English custom of afternoon tea around 1840. This practice quickly gained popularity and became an important private social event for ladies who climbed the echelons of society and an opportunity to showcase the hostess's expensive collection of fine china, and a time to subtly flaunt one's wealth.
