It is a high quality later Imari revival piece made for export. The central scene is a traditional ox-drawn cart often called a gosho guruma , set in a landscape with pine trees, rocks, and flowering branches. This motif is associated with courtly life, travel and elegance in classical Japanese art. The design is executed in classic Imari colors - iron red, cobalt blue, with touches of green and cream. The border is a patchwork panel rim, alternating floral medallions, textile patterns, and decorative reserves, a few feature a Shi Shi or lion dog. This kind of segmented border is very typical of Imari and Imari-revival wares. The scalloped edge was popular for export wares. The small oval gold sticker with made in Japan in red was used in the early 20th century for exported products to the US.

Please note the design is transfer-printed with hand-applied colors,rather than entirely hand-painted. It was a very common practice for export Imari. See less
