Elegant English Victorian chaise longue / méridienne in richly figured mahogany, attributed to the mid-19th century, circa 1850s.
The chaise features an exceptionally graceful serpentine form with elaborately carved scrolling details, sweeping upholstered ends, cabriole legs and brass casters. The mahogany frame has a warm, deep color and strong sculptural presence characteristic of high-quality Victorian furniture.
The piece was acquired as part of the estate of Geoffrey Baker, an English art professor, and subsequently brought to the United States. Prof. Baker painted and taught in the UK alongside prominent artists and writers including Sir Stanley Spencer, Richard Kennedy, Dodie Masterman, R.B. Kitaj, and Maurice Collis, most of whom became close personal friends, and his art was appreciated by noted critics such as R.H. Wilenski. He was also a close personal friend of the Beatles, particularly George Harrison.
The frame has been professionally refinished and the chaise has been newly upholstered in high-quality pure silk, with a complementary striped pattern and matching cushion. The upholstery is intentionally contemporary while retaining the proportions and character of the antique frame.
A handsome example of English Victorian furniture that works equally well as a functional chaise, bedroom piece, or decorative statement in a traditional or contemporary interior.
