The art of using bamboo in furniture making originated in China, dating as far back as the early 1600s, and would later heavily influence the English market through methods of trade. During the Victorian era, a resurgence of bamboo was seen throughout prominent estates such as the Brighton Pavilion, creating public demand for these unique handmade pieces. Additionally, the boom of the Industrial Revolution in late 19th century England is considered the most popular era of this style of furniture making, with many pieces still available from the period.

This particular side table was handcrafted in England and consists of a hand-painted, lacquered Chinoiserie-style top with a lacquered bamboo frame. The scene painted on the top of the piece is indicative of the period, featuring a floral motif in a traditional bright red coloration with Art Nouveau designs. The bottom of the table is joined by two bamboo stretchers, which can also be used as a floating shelf for books or tray placement. This transitional piece can be used in any living space, with its lightweight structure and timeless design making it a seamless addition to both modern and traditional interiors.
