Tarahumara (Raramuri) pottery olla (water or storage jug) with rawhide lacing, complete with its characteristic wooden display stand, handmade by the indigenous Tarahumara people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Northern Mexico.
The pot is created using traditional hand-coiling methods, without a potter's wheel. The surface often shows natural earthen finishes with tonal shifts from smoke-darkening during open-fire curing. The rawhide wrap is a traditional element that provides structural strength to the pot and prevents cracking from temperature changes or general use. These vessels were traditionally made for daily use, such as holding water, cooking, or fermenting. Today, they are primarily used as decorative items in Southwestern or rustic home decor.
