This is an antique English coal bin in black japanned tole (painted tin), with a scalloped, curved top edge and a straight front. The body is decorated in gilt with laurel wreath swags, scrollwork wave borders, and a central roundel of cherubs at play, matching the decorative scheme of a companion coal helmet scuttle (offered separately, or together as a pair on request). An oval brass plaque on the side is transcribed exactly below. It is sold as-is due to the paint loss described in the condition section.
Construction and design notes:
- Upright coal bin body in black japanned tole with a scalloped, curved top rim
- Gilt decoration: laurel wreath swags, scrollwork wave borders top and bottom, and a central cherub roundel matching the companion coal helmet scuttle
- Oval brass retailer's plaque affixed to the side, transcribed below
- No separate maker's diamond mark is visible on this piece; that mark appears on the companion helmet scuttle only
Label / mark transcription (exact):
Oval brass plaque (side): "PARNALL & SONS LTD / MANUFACTURERS & / COMPLETE SHOP FITTERS / FOR ALL TRADES / [address partially illegible] ST. BRISTOL"
Flat measurements: height 24 in (61 cm); top opening approximately 17 in x 19 in (43.2 x 48.3 cm).
This piece is sold as-is. There is visible paint loss and flaking to the black ground, most noticeable across the front panel, with scattered white speckling and bare patches down to the metal beneath. The gilt decoration remains legible. The body appears structurally sound in the photographs provided.
This piece suits a collector of English tole ware or fireplace antiques, or a decorator wanting a graphic black-and-gilt fireside accent. A matching coal helmet scuttle with identical decoration is available as a companion piece; see that listing, or ask about purchasing both together. Origin: England. Era: Victorian, 19th century (stylistic estimate); the shared decorative scheme with the marked companion scuttle supports this general dating, though not independently for this piece alone. Materials: painted tin (tole) with gilt decoration. Care: dust gently, avoid moisture, and do not attempt to touch up or repaint the losses without consulting a conservator. Sold as-is, no returns, given the paint loss noted above.
