This large antique Japanese porcelain charger is an example of Arita ware made in the Imari style, measuring over 13 inches in diameter. It features the classic Kinrande palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and extensive gold overglaze, arranged in a segmented radial composition surrounding a central blue and white floral medallion. Alternating panels depict birds, chrysanthemums, peonies, and geometric lattice motifs, creating the dense brocade-style decoration that made Imari porcelain highly sought after in European export markets.
Produced in the Arita region of Japan and shipped through the port of Imari, this piece likely dates to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1860–1890. The porcelain body is translucent and finely potted, with a simple foot rim where excess glaze was wiped during firing, typical of the era. The underside is decorated in white with freehand blue brushwork showing a naturalistic motif, and the base bears a square-shaped impressed mark. This charger is a visually rich and sophisticated example of 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain intended for both display and export.
