A beautifully hand-carved, circa 1850's, French Louis XV–style walnut fauteuil, made in a provincial atelier and constructed with classic early joinery techniques including square pegs driven into round mortises. The frame has a soft, time-earned walnut patina and charming floral and foliate carving along the crest and apron. Upholstered in a later mohair fabric showing attractive wear from age and use, this chair has the warm, relaxed elegance associated with provincial French craftsmanship and is ready to bring its quiet character and French charm into your home.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I love chairs like this because they carry such deep character. The frame has an honest, lived-in presence, and the carving—especially along the crest—retains that soft, hand-touched quality. The slightly worn mohair upholstery adds to that sense of history, giving the chair a relaxed, collected feel rather than something overly finished. It feels like a piece that’s been in the family for generations, yet it will also transform beautifully with new upholstery, all while keeping every bit of the charm of a well-made 19th-century French original.
