The elephant stools are here and there, and we see camels… but these tang style horses, we have not come across. These are dated to the early 1900’s and were likely made for Chinese export.
The horses are hand painted with florals and much detail. The saddles are decorated with bamboo, chrysanthemums and dogwood blossoms. They are also decorated with some of the ceremonial garb common to the tang horses. Each provides a surface to display plants or books - they also serve as great drinks tables. However you choose to use them in your home, the pair is guaranteed to be an attention grabber.
We searched and were unable to find a makers mark. We do know that they were found in the home of a couple who lived in the orient in the mid 20th century and amassed quite a collection of antique pieces as well as mid century chinoiserie.
Each one is slightly different.. perhaps even made by two different artists. This pair is a true collectors find. See less
