A beautifully hand-carved mid-19th-century French Louis XV–style walnut fauteuil, made in a provincial atelier and constructed with classic early joinery techniques including square pegs driven into round mortises. The frame has a soft, time-earned walnut patina and charming floral and foliate carving along the crest and apron. The generous serpentine seat and open arms retain an older velvet upholstery that is serviceable but worn. The chair has the warm, relaxed elegance associated with provincial French craftsmanship—perfect for reupholstery in a designer fabric.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I love chairs like this because they carry such deep character. The frame has an honest, lived-in presence, and the carving—especially along the crest—retains that soft, hand-touched quality. It feels like a piece that’s been in the family for generations, yet it will transform beautifully with new upholstery while keeping every bit of the charm of a well-made 19th-century French original.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
French provincial workshops continued to use 18th-century joinery traditions well into the 1800s, including the characteristic square pegs in slightly rounded mortises seen here. This detail is often mistaken for Louis XV period work, but in reality reflects the longevity of rural craft practice. Pieces from the 1840–1870 era—sometimes called the “Louis XV Revival”—faithfully echo earlier forms while offering sturdier frames and more consistent wood stock.
