There was no specific brief, only an open invitation to create. Guided by his sculptural instincts and fascination with form, Bertoia began bending metal rods into fluid, organic structures that conformed naturally to the human body. The result was a series of seating designs that felt as light and effortless as air itself.

This Diamond Chair perfectly captures Bertoia’s early vision. Judging by the slenderness of the steel rods, this piece likely dates to the 1960s, when production still emphasized the ethereal, weightless quality of his original concept. Later versions would adopt heavier gauges, sacrificing some of that airy delicacy.
