Dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period (circa 1900–1920), this Japanese hand-painted bowl reflects the export aesthetic that emerged as Japonisme spread through Western markets.
Produced in the Seto–Mino kiln region, the bowl features a dynamically modeled asymmetric form with a pierced thumb grip, a style characteristic of early 20th-century Japanese production for Western buyers. The figural garden scene combines katagami stencil outlines with hand-applied enamels in teal, sepia, and soft green, enhanced by iron-oxide sketchwork typical of transitional Meiji–Taishō wares.
The unmarked foot and white-glazed body are consistent with regional export production that prioritized artistry over branding. Provenance details unknown; acquired directly from a Northern California collection.
