Magnificent set of 8 Mottahedeh Porcelain dinner sized plates, The “Exotic Plant” series.
This set has a fabulous Provenance: From the Estate of Anne Kaufman Schneider, she was the daughter of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright George S. Kaufman. These porcelain plates have gone through one previous owner after Anne Kaufmann until reaching our establishment so that we could make them available on Chairish.
Mottahedeh's Exotic Plant series dinnerware was manufactured in Portugal, though the designs are inspired by European and Chinese porcelain traditions. While Mottahedeh products are largely produced in Europe, with Portugal being the main location, the company's patterns are based on historic designs from various cultures and time periods.
The Primary manufacturing location is Portugal for Mottahedeh production.
Inspiration: The patterns are often reproductions of historical designs, such as the Exotic Plant series which is based on Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory plates from England made between 1758 and 1769.
Company's approach: Mottahedeh uses time-honored techniques to create modern pieces based on these traditional designs, which are primarily based on Chinese exports to the West, as well as early European and Chinese designs
Mottahedeh produced a specific and very popular pattern called "The Exotic Plant," which is known for its detailed botanical prints of various plants, insects, and butterflies.
"The Exotic Plant" Series
Design Inspiration was developed by Sir Hans Sloane's paintings on Chelsea porcelain. Sloane was a physician and collector whose extensive natural history collection eventually formed the basis of the British Museum. The designs feature intricate, multicolored depictions of unique flora and fauna.
Mottahedeh is renowned for creating high-quality, museum-grade reproductions of historic porcelain, often commissioned by institutions like the U.S. State Department and diplomatic corps. The Exotic plant pattern is now discontinued by Mottahedeh, making the pieces vintage collectibles. They are rarely available through secondary market retailers such as Replacements, Ltd., eBay, and Etsy. This set of 8 unique plates is a rare find and a collectors dream.
