A striking and authentic pair of mid-19th century Chinese porcelain foo dogs, created as joss-stick holders and decorated in the vivid famille jaune palette. Standing nearly 10 inches tall (11.5 inches on bases), these long-bodied guardians are entirely hand-modeled—each with individually applied spiral curls, expressive faces, textured paws, and the charming asymmetry characteristic of true late-Qing workmanship.
The form is unusually sculptural: a tall, square joss-stick chimney rises behind each head, distinguishing this pair from the more familiar lions of later production. Their palette is equally distinctive, dominated by bright imperial yellow with deep emerald green feathering and touches of iron red. They are weighty for their size and display beautifully as a symmetrical pair. Includes hand-carved wood bases.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Joss-stick holders in the form of upright Buddhist lions with tall chimney backs appear in major museum collections, typically in earlier (18th-century) examples. While those precedents differ in palette, their sculptural format provides valuable context for the evolution of the type. By 1850 workshops in Canton adapted this form for the export market, hand-modeled figures like this pair—distinguished by brighter enamels and the increasingly popular famille jaune palette. The workmanship is characteristic of that later Qing period: individually rolled curls, applied fur tufts, and small variations that reflect true hand production rather than mold-made repetition. Their tall, squared joss-stick tubes mark them as both functional and symbolic, intended to stand as protective household guardians while serving a ritual purpose.
THE PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
From an investment standpoint, this pair occupies a significantly rarer category than the later 20th-century foo-dog incense burners that frequently enter the market. The yellow-glazed, long-bodied upright form with square joss-stick chimneys was produced in far smaller numbers, and matched pairs are meaningfully harder to acquire.
Their desirability is elevated by details collectors consistently pursue: hand-applied curls, individually modeled features, a dominant famille jaune palette, and the upright posture associated with earlier workshop production. Pieces combining these traits fall into the top 10–15% tier of surviving temple lion figures, making this pair not just decorative, but a strong long-term investment in genuine late-Qing craftsmanship.
