A remarkable set of six 19th-century English transferware plates, each delicately hand-painted in jewel-toned enamels over a sepia brown transfer scene.
The design depicts a charming Oriental garden vignette — pagodas, flowering trees, and figures in graceful repose — all framed by a golden-yellow border and scattered floral sprays in rose, cobalt, and green.
Originally made in Staffordshire, England around 1840–1855, these plates are attributed to Podmore, Walker & Co., celebrated for their export wares and richly detailed Chinoiserie designs. Each piece bears a teal-green underglaze mark typical of the period (smudged from firing, as was common in early Victorian production).
Hand-finished “clobbered” coloring gives every plate a slightly unique character — a true hallmark of antique craftsmanship.
