Spode 'New Stone' Imari Punch Bowl, Pattern 2283
Circa 1820
This beautiful Spode punch bowl, dating from circa 1815-1820, is a superb example of the firm's mastery of the Imari style. Crafted from Spode's innovative "New Stone" ceramic body, the bowl is painted in a rich palette of classic Imari colors: cobalt blue, iron-red, and gold. The interior is a work of art in itself, featuring a large central jardinière (ornamental vase) overflowing with meticulously painted flowers. This central motif is framed by broad, intricate borders of fan-shaped flowers and scrolling foliage, all set against a ground decorated with delicate iron-red leaves. The exterior of the bowl is a continuation of this opulent design, decorated with the same stunning fan forms and inset panels that encircle the entire piece, creating a sense of continuous and harmonious pattern.
Historical Context
The early 19th century was a period of intense artistic exchange and technological innovation in the English ceramics industry. Spode, one of the most celebrated and influential potteries of the era, was at the forefront of this movement. Founded by Josiah Spode I, the company was known for its technical excellence and its ability to adapt and perfect popular styles. The Imari style, originally from Japan, became highly fashionable in Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. English potters, including Spode, began to produce their own versions, adapting the vibrant, polychrome patterns to suit European tastes.
This punch bowl is made from "Spode's New Stone," a high-quality earthenware patented by Josiah Spode II around 1805. This new ceramic body was a significant innovation, as it combined the durability of earthenware with the whiteness and fine finish of porcelain, making it ideal for the intricate Imari-style decoration. The bold and detailed Pattern #2283 is one of many Imari patterns that Spode produced, each meticulously cataloged and painted by hand. The impressed mark "SPODES NEW STONE" and the hand-painted pattern number "2283" on the base are authenticating features, confirming its origin and date. This punch bowl is a testament to the skill of Spode's artisans and their contribution to the global appreciation of Anglo-Japanese design.
