Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
This whimsical, fun-to-look-at mortise and tenon joinery three-legged birthing chair was handcrafted from solid hardwood which we believe it to be ash wood, in a dark walnut stain and wax finish. The upper back rest and seat side arms have been adorned with carved out trefoil accents which adds to the chair’s charm. It measures 28” x 21” x 12” H/W/D; seat to floor height 13”; back 15” x 4½” H/W; seat 14” x 5” W/D (width includes handles); weight approximately 10 lbs. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age so there is a slight separation from the mortise at the bottom of the back rest due to shrinkage that does affect the structural integrity or beauty of the chair (see photo 7); it does not move or have any wiggle. There is also a surface hairline split on the back of the third leg which again, does impact stability or attractiveness (see photos 8 & 10). No makers mark but from what we understand, the chair was handcrafted in Germany sometime in the 1950s to early 1960s.
Small chairs and stools, for me, have always been somewhat of an accessory piece around our home. You can never have too many and they can be easily moved around from room-to-room, space-to-space, to meet the need of the moment, whether it been seating or décor. With all that said, this beauty will look marvelous wherever placed!
