The realistic … Read more Set of four early 20th Century German plates by Franz Ant Mehlem, Royal Bonn, of fish possibly trout. The realistic design of the fish is a form of transferware. These plates were produced sometime between 1890- 1920s based on the markings on the back. Signed. These are made from Earthenware but in a certain fashion to appear as if they are porcelain. Mehlem was one of two companies that were able to accomplish this technique at the time. After the business transferred hands a number of times, ultimately Villeroy and Boch bought out the company and proceeded to close the company down a few years after acquiring it.

There is crazing on the backs of the plates which is to be expected with age and light usage. I'm sure these plates can be used if you wish, but I would recommend they be admired as art installations of some type. See less
