The Black Agate Snuff Bottle has a flatten square shape with sloping shoulders, sides tapering to a flat oval foot. The straight neck is short with a round top. The black body has deep black fragments against lighter matrix, with lines of white/grey/brown. The body has a variegated appearance rather than even color, the pattern would be naturally irregular and organic. It is matched with an orange brown agate stopper on a black disk.
This bottle was purchased almost 20 years ago from a collector who started collecting all over Southeast Asia in the late 1070's. That was the time when China re-opened to world trade. Craftsmen were encouraged to produce high quality wares for trade with the West. The bottles from this collector are beautiful specimens of rare and good looking stones that are rare in the market today.
