Jasper is an opaque variety … Read more The Yellow jasper snuff bottle with streaks of black is a very evocative, beautiful variation. Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony which is a microcrystalline quartz. The yellow color is obtained from iron oxides and other mineral impurities. The streaks of black could be caused by inclusions of manganese oxides, carbon, and other metal oxides. The swirls of black colors that occurs in patches or streaks enhance the well polished appearance.

The bottle is surprisingly light despite its size. It has a flattern oval shape tapering towards a raised oval foot. Its straight neck rises from sloping shoulders. It has a slightly concave top. The yellow bottle is matched with an agate stopper with a cork core. The stopper has an interesting beige color with tiny brown spots.

Please note there is a long fissure that runs down one side of the bottle. Fissure and cracks are natural occurrences in quartz materials. Perhaps the carver thought well enough of the beauty of the stone not to carve it out.
