This impressive French mantle clock (or for some other prominent place), is marked JAPY on the interior and dated 1878. Solid brass, with its original two-tone patina; standing a full 18 1/4 inches high! I hesitate to say whether it's lacquered, but how else to explain the brass highlights (look closely, you'll see them)? It chimes (correctly) on the 1/2 hour and hour and runs extremely quietly (the chimes are also very quiet). There is no key; the squared rods which the key turns are about 1/8 inch square. When the pendulum is moved the clock runs for 10-15 minutes and then stops, suggesting the need for a cleaning/adjustment. The face appears to be made of celluloid (it's not porcelain).
The feet in front are 11 inches across and the depth of the clock is about 3 1/2 inches (all measurements are close but approximate).
