A witty yet refined statement piece, this sculptural chair was designed by French artist Stéphane Rondel in the late 1980s. Known as the “Cat Chair,” its playful silhouette features a stylized feline head, whimsical whisker-like arms, and a sinuous zig-zag tail. The design exemplifies postmodern creativity while functioning as an artistic object in its own right.
Produced in very limited numbers between 1987–88, the Cat Chair was never commercially distributed and is now rarely seen on the market. A version resides in the collection of the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand. Catalogued as aluminum, this piece is heavy in weight with a verdigris green patina, lending it both visual depth and sculptural weight. Both functional and collectible, it represents the 1980s spirit of design-as-art and will appeal to collectors of postmodern furniture, Memphis-era design, and fine decorative arts.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE:
Stéphane Rondel (French, b. 1950s) pushed beyond traditional furniture forms, creating objects that blurred art, design, and humor. His Cat Chair is among his most iconic designs, celebrated for its originality and scarcity. With only a handful known in institutional and private collections, it remains a rare opportunity for connoisseurs of postmodern design to acquire an authentic piece of 1980s design history.

The primary wear is on the underside of the base where it meets the floor (see last photo). On the head, there is a small spot where turquoise paint is absent; this appears more like a glaze skip in the original finish than a later chip. A rare and whimsical design icon, it is ready to bring sculptural charm and playful sophistication into your home. less
