Mayan Polychrome Bowl With Flora and Fauna Motif, 600-900 C.E.
Offered is a beautiful Mayan bowl, with a concave base and flared walls, features a hand-painted hummingbird and floral motif, three scenes, above a horizontal register of flowers and stripes, red bands at extremities. Origin: Mexico. Period: 600-900 C.E. Material: Earthenware with pigment.
Interpretation: Illustrates the mutually beneficial relationship between hummingbirds and flowers, incremental changes can be observed in scenes.
Measures: 6 D x 4.25 H inches (15.24 D x 10.80 cm)
Weight: 15.7 ounces (446 g)
Provenance: Ex-Northern California private collection, active as a collector from the 1960s - 1980s, acquired from Butterfield & Butterfield Auctioneers (BBA), 220 San Bruno Ave, San Francisco, CA, circa 1980s. Private provenance available upon request.
Documentation: Original BBA receipt, typed, dated 10 December 1987.
